The nectar in the story of Rama is like the Sarayu river, which moves silently by the city of Ayodhya, where Rama was born and ruled. Sarayu has its source in the Himalayan Lake of Mind (Manasa-Sarovar), just as this story is born in the lake of the mind! The Rama stream bears the sweetness of compassion; the stream of Lakshmana (Rama’s brother and devoted companion) has the sweetness of devotion. Just as the Sarayu river joins the Ganges and the waters commingle, so too, the streams of tender compassion and devotion (stories of Rama and Lakshmana) commingle in the Ramayana. Between them, compassion and love (karuna and prema) make up the composite picture of the glory of Rama! That picture fulfils the heart’s dearest yearning of every Indian, and to attain it is the aim of every spiritual striving! The effort of the individual is but half the pursuit; the other half is the grace of God. People fulfil themselves by self-effort as well as divine blessings; fulfilment takes them across the dark ocean of dualities to the immanent and transcendent One! – Ramakatha Rasavahini, Ch 1.

Der Nektar in der Geschichte von Rama ist wie der Fluss Sarayu, der lautlos durch die Stadt Ayodhya fließt, wo Rama geboren wurde und regierte. Sarayu entspringt im Himalaya-See des Geistes (Manasa-Sarovar), so wie diese Geschichte im See des Geistes geboren wird! Der Strom von Rama trägt die Süße des Mitgefühls; der Strom von Lakshmana (Ramas Bruder und ergebener Gefährte) hat die Süße der Hingabe. So wie der Fluss Sarayu in den Ganges mündet und sich die Wasser vermischen, so vermischen sich auch die Ströme des zarten Mitgefühls und der Hingabe (die Geschichten von Rama und Lakshmana) im Ramayana. Zwischen ihnen bilden Mitgefühl und Liebe (karuna und prema) das zusammengesetzte Bild der Herrlichkeit von Rama! Dieses Bild erfüllt die liebste Sehnsucht des Herzens eines jeden Inders, und es zu erreichen, ist das Ziel jedes spirituellen Strebens! Die Anstrengung des Einzelnen ist nur die Hälfte des Strebens; die andere Hälfte ist die Gnade Gottes. Der Mensch erfüllt sich sowohl durch eigene Anstrengung als auch durch göttliche Segnungen; die Erfüllung führt ihn über den dunklen Ozean der Dualitäten zu dem immanenten und transzendenten Einen!
