You have to read the newspaper to know how mad and foolish the world is; how futile is heroism, how momentary the glory; and after perusing it for the information it conveys, you throw it aside; it is now a tasteless waste. So too, live but once; so live that you are born but once. Do not fall in love with the world so much that your false fascination brings you again and again into this delusive amalgam of joy and grief. Unless you stand back a little, away from entanglement with the world, knowing that it is all a play whose director is God, you are in danger of being too closely involved. Use the world as a training ground for sacrifice, service, expansion of the heart, and cleansing of the emotions. That is the only value it has. Do not waste time purposelessly; let every moment be Bhajana. Know the purpose of Bhajana or Naamasmarana and devote yourself wholeheartedly to it; derive the maximum benefit from the years allotted to you. – Divine Discourse, Mar 28, 1967.

Ihr müsst die Zeitung lesen, um zu wissen, wie verrückt und töricht die Welt ist; wie nutzlos das Heldentum ist, wie kurzlebig der Ruhm; und nachdem ihr sie wegen der Informationen, die sie vermittelt, durchgelesen habt, werft ihr sie beiseite; sie ist jetzt eine geschmacklose Verschwendung. So lebt auch ihr nur einmal; lebt so, dass ihr nur einmal geboren werdet. Verliebt euch nicht so sehr in die Welt, dass eure falsche Faszination euch immer wieder in dieses trügerische Amalgam aus Freud und Leid bringt. Wenn ihr euch nicht ein wenig von der Welt zurückzieht, weil ihr wisst, dass alles ein Schauspiel ist, dessen Regisseur Gott ist, lauft ihr Gefahr, zu sehr darin verwickelt zu werden. Benutzt die Welt als Übungsfeld für Aufopferung, Dienst, Erweiterung des Herzens und Reinigung der Gefühle. Das ist der einzige Wert, den sie hat. Vergeudet die Zeit nicht sinnlos; lasst jeden Augenblick Bhajana sein. Erkennt den Zweck von Bhajana oder Naamasmarana und widmet euch ihm von ganzem Herzen; zieht den größtmöglichen Nutzen aus den euch zugewiesenen Jahren. – Sri Sathya Sai, 28. März 1967.
