Since your vision is impaired by doubt, pride, or prejudice you don’t see God, who is in you as well as outside you. You long for a thing that is not; you ignore the treasure that’s within your grasp. You swear you have no bird in your hand; you struggle for birds, that you believe, are waiting for you in the bush. The bird in the bush is only the image of the bird you have in your hand but you are unaware of this truth. You have faith in the senses and the knowledge they garner; you have faith in fancies and fantasies of your mind; you have faith in the conclusions of your reason; but you have no faith in God who cannot be bound or found by these. So, you fear, you grieve, you doubt! Have the curtain of ‘Thought of God’ all around you; then, deadly mosquitoes of desire and distrust cannot harm you. That curtain will confer health on you, through immunity from disease. You will have undisturbed ease, with nothing to pine for, nothing to fear from.

Da eure Sicht durch Zweifel, Stolz oder Vorurteile beeinträchtigt ist, seht ihr Gott nicht, der sowohl in euch als auch außerhalb von euch ist. Ihr sehnt euch nach etwas, das nicht ist; ihr ignoriert den Schatz, der in eurer Reichweite liegt. Ihr schwört, dass ihr keinen Vogel in der Hand habt; ihr kämpft für Vögel, von denen ihr glaubt, dass sie im Busch auf euch warten. Der Vogel im Busch ist nur das Bild des Vogels, den ihr in der Hand haltet, aber ihr seid euch dieser Wahrheit nicht bewusst. Ihr habt Vertrauen in die Sinne und das Wissen, das sie sammeln; ihr habt Vertrauen in die Phantasien und Vorstellungen eures Verstandes; ihr habt Vertrauen in die Schlussfolgerungen eurer Vernunft; aber ihr habt kein Vertrauen in Gott, der nicht durch diese gebunden oder gefunden werden kann. So fürchtet ihr euch, ihr trauert, ihr zweifelt! Habt den Vorhang des „Gottesgedankens“ um euch herum; dann können euch die tödlichen Mücken des Verlangens und des Misstrauens nichts anhaben. Dieser Vorhang wird euch Gesundheit verleihen, indem er euch immun gegen Krankheiten macht. Ihr werdet ungestörte Leichtigkeit haben, ohne Sehnsucht und ohne Angst.
