A lady wept that her necklace was lost or stolen; she searched everywhere and became inconsolably sad. Then, when she passed a mirror, she found the lost necklace around her neck. Thus, it was there all the time. Similarly, God is there, as the Inner Dweller, whether you know it or not. Love is of three kinds: a) self-centred, which like a bulb, illumines just a small room; b) mutual, which like the moonlight, spreads wider but is not clearer; and c) others-centred, which like the sunlight, is all pervasive and clear. Cultivate the third type of love; that will save you. All the service that you do to others through that love is in fact service done to yourself. Eine Dame weinte, ihre Halskette sei verloren gegangen oder gestohlen worden; sie suchte überall und wurde untröstlich traurig. Als sie dann an einem Spiegel vorbeikam, fand sie die verlorene Kette um ihrem Hals. So war sie die ganze Zeit über da. In ähnlicher Weise ist Gott da als der innere Bewohner, ob ihr es wisst oder nicht. Es gibt drei Arten von Liebe: a) die egozentrische, die wie eine Glühbirne nur einen kleinen Raum erhellt; b) die gegenseitige, die sich wie das Mondlicht weiter ausbreitet, aber nicht klarer ist; und c) die fremdzentrierte, die wie das Sonnenlicht alles durchdringt und klar ist. Kultiviert die dritte Art der Liebe; sie wird euch retten. All der Dienst, den ihr durch diese Liebe anderen erweist, ist in Wirklichkeit ein Dienst an euch selbst. Es sind nicht die anderen, denen ihr helft, sondern ihr selbst seid es, dem geholfen wird, bedenkt dies.
