All beings are like flowers that bloom and fade before the day is over; but, like this garland you offered Me when I came amidst you, they are strung on one eternal indestructible thread, the thread (Sutra) called the Divine (Brahman). Establish this non-dual attitude (Bhava-adwaitam) in your mind; it will render your service more enjoyable, more fruitful, more sweet and pleasant to the recipient. Without that attitude, paropakaram (doing good to others) becomes help doled out to lesser men and poorer folk, by superior persons. All such help will be suspected and resented; it is contaminated at the source as well as at the destination. Of course, one should not treat all equally, or have the same prescription for all. Serve each according to the specific need and capacity so that they benefit by the help. The Divine (Antaratma) is the same in all, but, you should not give a knife into the hands of a mad man, or a gold necklace to a child. Alle Wesen sind wie Blumen, die blühen und verwelken, bevor der Tag vorüber ist; aber wie diese Girlande, die ihr mir dargeboten habt, als ich mitten unter euch kam, sind sie an einem ewigen unzerstörbaren Faden aufgereiht, dem Faden (Sutra), der das Göttliche (Brahman) genannt wird. Festigt diese nichtduale Einstellung (Bhava-adwaitam) in eurem Geist; sie wird euren Dienst erfreulicher, fruchtbarer, süßer und angenehmer für den Empfänger machen. Ohne diese Einstellung wird Paropakaram (anderen Gutes tun) zu einer Hilfe, die von höheren Personen an geringere Menschen und ärmere Völker verteilt wird. Jede solche Hilfe wird verdächtigt und übel genommen; sie ist sowohl an der Quelle als auch am Ziel verunreinigt. Natürlich sollte man nicht alle gleich behandeln oder für alle das gleiche Rezept haben. Man sollte jedem entsprechend seiner spezifischen Bedürfnisse und Fähigkeiten dienen, so dass er von der Hilfe profitiert. Das Göttliche (Antaratma) ist in allen gleich, aber man sollte nicht einem Verrückten ein Messer in die Hand geben oder einem Kind eine goldene Halskette. Das Kind wird es wegwerfen; der Verrückte könnte jemandem die Kehle durchschneiden. – Sri Sathya Sai, 4. November 1965.
