Look at the bee! It has contact only with sweetness; it approaches only flowers that possess nectar; it is not attracted to other places; it doesn’t proceed there at all. Similarly, one has to give up all inclinations toward sensory attractions, toward the rubbish cart of the untrue and the impermanent. As far as possible, one has to direct the mind to all holy things, which yield sweetness and the joy associated with the Lord. To attain these, time is needed, of course. How long that time will be, depends on the activities of thought, word, and deed as well as on the motives that impel those actions. If one examines deeply the success in getting rid of all idea of self, one can oneself gauge the progress one has made! Instead, if one is engaged in counting the rules and adding up the time spent and the expense incurred, such meditation can belong only to the objective world; it can never come into the subjective and spiritual fields! – Dhyana Vahini, Ch 2.

Seht euch die Biene an! Sie kommt nur mit der Süße in Berührung; sie nähert sich nur den Blumen, die Nektar enthalten; sie wird nicht von anderen Orten angezogen; sie geht überhaupt nicht dorthin. In ähnlicher Weise muss man alle Neigungen zu sinnlichen Reizen, zum Müllwagen des Unwahren und Unbeständigen aufgeben. So weit wie möglich muss man den Geist auf alle heiligen Dinge richten, die Süße und die mit dem Herrn verbundene Freude hervorbringen. Um diese zu erlangen, braucht man natürlich Zeit. Wie lange diese Zeit sein wird, hängt von den Aktivitäten in Gedanken, Worten und Taten ab sowie von den Motiven, die diese Handlungen antreiben. Wenn man den Erfolg bei der Beseitigung aller Vorstellungen von sich selbst gründlich prüft, kann man selbst den Fortschritt messen, den man gemacht hat! Wenn man stattdessen damit beschäftigt ist, die Regeln zu zählen und die aufgewendete Zeit und die entstandenen Kosten zu addieren, kann eine solche Meditation nur der objektiven Welt angehören; sie kann niemals in den subjektiven und spirituellen Bereich kommen!
