If anybody accosts a person and asks him, “Who are you?”, out of his identification with the body he gives his name in reply. In answer to further questions, he introduces himself as a doctor, a farmer, or student, or the like. When the enquiry goes further, he identifies himself with his nationality as an American, an Indian, a Pakistani or so on. When you examine these answers deeply, you will find that none of them gives the truth. He got his name from his parents. It did not belong to him at birth. His identification with one or other of his professions is not true because he is not the profession. What then is the truth about him? “I am the Atma. That is my true Self.” That is the truth. But people identify themselves with their names, professions and nationality and do not base their lives on the Atma. No driver of a car identifies with the car. Likewise, the body is a car and the Atma is the driver. Forgetting one’s true role as a driver, one is identifying one’s self with the body, which is only a vehicle. – Divine Discourse, Aug 23, 1995.

Wenn jemand einen Menschen anspricht und ihn fragt: „Wer bist du?“, gibt er aus seiner Identifikation mit dem Körper heraus seinen Namen zur Antwort. Auf weitere Fragen hin stellt er sich als Arzt, Landwirt, Student oder ähnliches vor. Wenn die Frage weitergeht, identifiziert er sich mit seiner Nationalität als Amerikaner, Inder, Pakistani und so weiter. Wenn ihr diese Antworten genauer untersucht, werdet ihr feststellen, dass keine von ihnen der Wahrheit entspricht. Er hat seinen Namen von seinen Eltern erhalten. Er gehörte ihm nicht von Geburt an. Seine Identifikation mit dem einen oder anderen Beruf ist nicht wahr, denn er ist nicht der Beruf. Was ist dann die Wahrheit über ihn? „Ich bin der Atman. Das ist mein wahres Selbst.“ Das ist die Wahrheit. Aber die Menschen identifizieren sich mit ihren Namen, Berufen und ihrer Nationalität und richten ihr Leben nicht auf den Atman aus. Kein Fahrer eines Autos identifiziert sich mit dem Auto. Genauso ist der Körper ein Auto und der Atman ist der Fahrer. Wenn man seine wahre Rolle als Fahrer vergisst, identifiziert man sich mit dem Körper, der nur ein Fahrzeug ist. – Sri Sathya Sai, 23. August 1995.
