The mind, as Arjuna complained, hops from belief to doubt, from one conclusion to its negation and it causes turmoil and confusion. But, there is one method by which it can be conquered. The black bee can bore a hole in the hardest wood. But, when dusk intervenes while it is sipping the nectar from the lotus flower and, as a result, when the open petals close in on the bee, it finds itself imprisoned, with no hope of escape. It does not know how to deal with softness! So too, the mind can play its tricks and jump wantonly in any arena; but when placed on the lotus feet of the Lord, it becomes inactive and harmless. In order to offer the mind entirely to the Lord, deep detachment from worldly desires is needed. Superficial devotion or shallow steadfastness cannot succeed. Der Verstand springt, wie Arjuna beklagte, vom Glauben zum Zweifel, von einer Schlussfolgerung zu ihrer Verneinung, und das verursacht Aufruhr und Verwirrung. Aber es gibt eine Methode, mit der er besiegt werden kann. Die schwarze Biene kann ein Loch in das härteste Holz bohren. Aber wenn die Dämmerung dazwischenkommt, während sie den Nektar der Lotusblume schlürft, und sich die geöffneten Blütenblätter um die Biene schließen, ist sie gefangen und kann nicht entkommen. Sie weiß nicht, wie sie mit Sanftheit umgehen soll! So kann auch der Geist seine Streiche spielen und in jeder Arena mutwillig herumspringen; aber wenn er auf die Lotusfüße des Herrn gelegt wird, wird er inaktiv und harmlos. Um den Verstand ganz Gott hinzugeben, ist eine tiefe Loslösung von weltlichen Begierden erforderlich. Oberflächliche Hingabe und Standhaftigkeit können nicht erfolgreich sein. Um den harten Sandelholzbaum zu fällen, braucht man eine schwere Axt aus Stahl.
