God is inscrutable. He can’t be realised in the outer objective world; He is in the very heart of every being. Gemstones must be sought deep underground; they do not float in mid-air. Seek God in the depths of yourself, not in the tantalising, kaleidoscopic Nature. The body is granted to you for this high purpose; you are now misusing it, like the person who cooked his daily food in a gem-studded gold vase that came as an heirloom. Man extols God as omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent, but ignores His presence in himself! Of course, many venture to describe the attributes of God and proclaim Him to be such and such; these are but their own guesses and the reflections of their own predilections and preferences. Who can affirm that God is this or that? Who can affirm that God is not of this form or with this attribute? Each one acquires from the vast expanse of the ocean only as much as can be contained in the vessel he carries to the shore. Gott ist unergründlich. Er kann nicht in der äußeren, objektiven Welt erkannt werden; er ist im Herzen eines jeden Wesens. Edelsteine muss man tief unter der Erde suchen; sie schweben nicht in der Luft. Sucht Gott in den Tiefen eures Selbst, nicht in der verlockenden, kaleidoskopischen Natur. Der Körper ist euch zu diesem hohen Zweck gegeben; ihr missbrauchst ihn jetzt, wie der Mensch, der sein tägliches Essen in einer mit Edelsteinen besetzten Goldvase kochte, die er als Erbstück erhalten hatte. Der Mensch preist Gott als allgegenwärtig, allwissend und allmächtig, aber er ignoriert seine Gegenwart in sich selbst! Natürlich wagen es viele, die Eigenschaften Gottes zu beschreiben und ihn als so und so zu bezeichnen; das sind aber nur ihre eigenen Vermutungen und die Widerspiegelung ihrer eigenen Vorlieben und Neigungen. Wer kann behaupten, dass Gott dies oder jenes ist? Wer kann behaupten, dass Gott nicht diese Form oder dieses Attribut hat? Jeder nimmt von der unermesslichen Weite des Ozeans nur so viel auf, wie in das Gefäß passt, das er ans Ufer trägt. Von dieser Menge kann er nur wenig von dieser Unermesslichkeit erfassen.
