The observance of Shivaratri is for purifying the heart by contemplation on God. When the heart is purified, the entire life becomes sanctified. There will be no need for elaborate social reconstruction if people develop good qualities and act righteously. Young people should get rid of bad thoughts and bad habits. The spiritual quest cannot be put off to old age. The time to start seeking the Divine is now. Remember, there is nothing in this world as powerful as the Lord’s name to protect it. It’s not arms and bombs that will save the world. Only God’s grace protects the world. It is man’s foremost duty to pray for God’s grace. Prayer is of supreme importance. Together with melody and rhythm, you have to impart feeling to your singing to make the bhajan a sacred offering to the Divine. A ragam (tune) without bhavam (feeling) is a rogam (an infliction). Giving up conceit and exhibitionism, you must sing the bhajans in a spirit of humility and devotion. That is the right way to perform bhajans. – Divine Discourse, Feb 13, 1991.

Die Einhaltung von Shivaratri dient der Reinigung des Herzens durch Kontemplation Gottes. Wenn das Herz gereinigt ist, wird das gesamte Leben geheiligt. Wenn die Menschen gute Eigenschaften entwickeln und rechtschaffen handeln, ist ein aufwändiger sozialer Wiederaufbau nicht nötig. Junge Menschen sollten sich von schlechten Gedanken und schlechten Gewohnheiten befreien. Die spirituelle Suche kann nicht bis ins hohe Alter aufgeschoben werden. Die Zeit, das Göttliche zu suchen, ist jetzt gekommen. Denkt daran, dass es in dieser Welt nichts gibt, das so mächtig ist wie der Name des Herrn, um sie zu schützen. Es sind nicht Waffen und Bomben, die die Welt retten werden. Nur die Gnade Gottes beschützt die Welt. Es ist die oberste Pflicht des Menschen, um Gottes Gnade zu beten. Das Gebet ist von höchster Bedeutung. Zusammen mit Melodie und Rhythmus müsst ihr eurem Gesang Gefühl verleihen, um den Bhajan zu einer heiligen Gabe an das Göttliche zu machen. Ein Ragam (Melodie) ohne Bhavam (Gefühl) ist ein Ragam (eine Zumutung). Verzichtet auf Eitelkeit und Exhibitionismus, ihr müsst die Bhajans im Geiste der Demut und Hingabe singen. Das ist die richtige Art, Bhajans zu singen.
