Living implies the operation in the individual of the life principle that activates all beings. The attributeless Divine assumes certain qualities as Its nature and becomes saguna. The individual thus formed seeks to know and experience the variety of names and forms that are exposed to Its senses of perception and its mind. This is, in short, the process of living, the project of “knowing”, of expanding one’s awareness. The process has a beginning and an end, it involves success and failure, good and evil. “I am Jivi, a live individual”, “I am a spark of Consciousness”, “I am embodied Atma” – declarations such as these do not reveal a knowledge of the life principle. The Jivi is Divine Consciousness, installed in a chariot. It is not a bundle of inert stuff moulded into a form and labelled with a name. There is only One all-pervading Consciousness but man experiences It in fragments and, mistaking It as Many, he gropes in the confusion caused by his own ignorance. – Divine Discourse, Mar 22, 1985.

Leben bedeutet, dass im Individuum das Lebensprinzip wirkt, das alle Wesen aktiviert. Das eigenschaftslose Göttliche nimmt bestimmte Eigenschaften als seine Natur an und wird saguna. Das so entstandene Individuum versucht, die Vielfalt der Namen und Formen, die seinen Wahrnehmungssinnen und seinem Verstand zugänglich sind, zu erkennen und zu erfahren. Dies ist, kurz gesagt, der Prozess des Lebens, das Projekt des „Wissens“, der Erweiterung des eigenen Bewusstseins. Der Prozess hat einen Anfang und ein Ende, er beinhaltet Erfolg und Misserfolg, Gut und Böse. „Ich bin Jivi, ein lebendiges Individuum“, „Ich bin ein Funke des Bewusstseins“, „Ich bin das verkörperte Selbst (atman)“ – Erklärungen wie diese offenbaren kein Wissen über das Lebensprinzip. Der Jivi ist göttliches Bewusstsein, das in einem Wagen sitzt. Es ist kein Bündel träger Materie, das in eine Form gegossen und mit einem Namen versehen wurde. Es gibt nur ein alles durchdringendes Bewusstsein, aber der Mensch erfährt es in Bruchstücken, und weil er es mit vielen verwechselt, tappt er in der Verwirrung, die durch seine eigene Unwissenheit verursacht wird.
